Ecuador Day 32

"Day 32 and nothing new"- Devin

So, today was a good day. We didn't leave the house until 3 pm, but when we did, we were out until 8:30 or so, which is later than we have ever been out!

The biggest/saddest news of the day is that our Costco 5 lb. brick of cheddar cheese reached its end today. So sad. We packed it and lovingly brought it with us and it has lasted us this long (cheese is a joke here in Ecuador and if you know us, you know we like cheese!) so this is truly sad news. We will now get to deal with rubbery mozzarella (with no taste, mind you) as a substitute. yippee.
Bye bye cheddar cheese! Hello, yucky mozzarella!
The best news of the day is that Jace woke up with no fever! Wahoo!! So, we are putting the doctor visit on hold for now. THANK YOU THANK YOU though to everyone who supplied us with ideas for good doctors around here. We are storing it away in case we need it again later, which is entirely possible. Jace was much happier today too, smiling and laughing like his normal self. He is becoming quite the cheese-ball. He just has to start himself laughing and then he will laugh and laugh (fake of course) for ages about nothing at all. Such a cute kid. I am dreading the day that he has to go home and I won't get to have my daily dose of his laughs. Poo.

When we left our den at 3 (why did we wait so long? Well because Hallie took a nap! This is cause for celebration as she never naps!) we headed to the Santa Clara Market, the fruit and vegetable place. We were low on some things (okay everything) so we stocked back up. We then met up with our friends the Schinnerers to go look at apartments since both of us will need to be finding a new place to stay here soon. Remind me to never complain again about our case as Jim and Robin have been here since the day after we arrived and their case has not even been started yet. Yes, you read that right. Huge problems going on there, but they have such great attitudes about it all. I admire the way they are handling things. Erin (who gets to leave this weekend!) said that if she were in their place, she would have grown horns by now, and I totally agree.

Anyway, they are needing a new place as the one they have now is only free until Feb 1st. We took a walk around and looked at some places that they had scoped out online. They found two apartments that are really close to one another where we could stay. We could only see them from the outside though, so we will have to try to go back tomorrow to get an inside tour. It would be really nice to be that close to them and plus the potential apartment for Flor and I is like half a block from where we go to church, so that would be lovely. However, we need to check them out inside first before any decisions are made. We also went a little further south in town to see a hotel that they found online with long-term stay vacancies. That is also an option, but seemed a bit pricey, so we will see what happens.

By the time we were done looking at places, it was starting to rain and was getting dark. We tried to hail a taxi to meet Erin for dinner (she went to Guayaquil today to complete the visa process with the US embassy), but we could not find any taxis at all. By the way, Hallie announced today that she is going to be a taxi driver when she grows up now. I think she has gone down a few rungs on the ladder since previously she always said that she wanted to work where I work and do what I do. Oh well, a taxi driver will be nice for her if that is what she ends up doing.

Since we couldn't find any taxis, we just roamed to the corner and there happened to be a McDonald's, so that was dinner. Erin met us there and reviewed her day in Guayaquil to help prepare us and the Schinnerers for that when it happens for us, weeks and weeks down the road. haha.

We got home, got the kids quickly into bed, and here we are.

Thanks everyone again for your prayers for Jace. We feel that they helped him, as did the blessing that Devin gave him. It's just scary to not have access to medical care like we are used to.

Two more pictures from today:
Sheet washing day around here. Flor decided to cuddle with the sheet.

Back to his usual self. Please forgive the food in his mouth.

This is mike. I can not believe that you do not LOVE the chees in latin america. Obviously, you are buying the wrong cheese from the wrong places in fact. Here are my professional reccomendations: guajada (eat with tortillas), queso fresco (which is good with everything) and then the last cheese and maybe my second favorite, queso semi seco (which is delightly salty and delicious with a pot of beans). That is also. Enjoy the queso. You can thank me when you get home. If that ever happens.

Side note: make sure you are buying your cheese from the markets not the grocery store. And don't mind the flies on them. Its not a big deal.

Oh and one last thing if you want to replace your 5 pound brick of cheese with 5 pounds of guajada for me on your return flight that would be splendid.

Laughing at Mikes comments! All the cheese we had there was rubbery, sounds like chewing rubber bands, and salty! It was protein tho and we were thankful. I will never forget my husbands first day back, he had to get off the plane in Atlanta and drive to a meeting in Tampa. When we talked that night he listed off all the restaurants and foods he had eaten en route, told me about the scalding hot shower. I promise you, one day you will laugh about it. I am still wishing that the families following us still planned for the 8-9 weeks in country that everyone had experienced previously.(insert huge frown here) Make sure you discuss Embassy protocol thoroughly, I was uninformed and SO embarrassed. The Lawyer/rep is so awesome and you will love her!

SOOO glad Jace is doing better. When I got sick in Mexico is freaked me out to be getting medical care in a foreign country, so I am glad you did't have to worry about that!!
That picture of Flor on the couch is so cute!!
Silly Hallie wanting to be a taxi driver! haha thats really cute! I was just thinking your kids are going to hate sitting in their car seats when they get back home. My kids would love the way the ride there! ;)
