"In running, it doesn't matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, 'I have finished.' There is a lot of satisfaction in that." -Fred Lebow, New York City Marathon co-founder
I can definitely say I will never come first in running. My question is...how do people enjoy this so much!?
I am up to running 2 miles at a time. Now, I know that most of you are probably scoffing at that, but let me tell you- I finish beet red, panting, and feeling as if I am going to die. Not pretty sight, for sure.
I am starting to like running a little bit better, but that's usually only after I am done. While I am running is a different story. While I run, I am usually cursing Camille and Kylee with everything I have. :) Just kidding...sort of.
I have a handy dandy app on my phone that tells me how far I am going, shows the gps map, tells my speed, and counts calories. That has been fun because it motivates me to do better than I did the last time. However, I am still not good by any means. One mile usually takes me 10-11 minutes. Maybe one day I will get faster, but right now I am just concentrating on the achievement of making it!
I also just got my first pair of running shoes, EVER. Yeah, they are a big help. I was just running in my old tennis shoes before and I could certainly feel it. These make it a lot easier to run. Funny how that works, right?
Well, if anything, at least these two look cute when we go for runs....
So- you runners out there, how do you do it!? What keeps you motivated? What do you think about/do when you run? Music? I haven't tried that yet, though maybe I will!
Send your help my way! Heaven knows I certainly need it!

I'm no help. Sorry!
my fastest mile when I was running was 12.5 or something so you are doing great. Since I got pregnant, I haven't run so it is probably a lot worse now.
Kimmie!!! So proud of you!!! You are doing so awesome! Some running days are better than others, but I do love the feeling of finishing something hard. And my body just feels so good after a run- I try to remember that when I'm running.
A few things that help the run go faster:
- Talking to the person you run with. It's good to run at a pace where you can carry on a conversation. This is the best!
- I've run with my phone on speaker and talked to people on the phone too. :) But I can only do that super early in the morning or the sound of cars is too loud.
- Listen to music that pumps you up- Lady Gaga or any songs you really like. Wicked?? Sing along if you want!
- Listen to books on cd on your ipod. I've been going to the lib and just downloading the books and then put them on my ipod. This really helps because it distracts my mind. I'm not one that likes to think too much when I run- I'd rather be distracted. Harry Potter is great- I swear I've read all those books at least 5 times each.
Other motivators to run:
1- Really the reason I work out... so I can eat more! :) I like to have chocolate milk after I run because I love it and it's something to look forward to when I finish. :) And it's supposedly really good for you to replenish your lost nutrients... but seeing as you don't love chocolate or milk, maybe you could have gatorade? You must try the G2 series Blueberry Pomegranate gatorade!! It's my FAV!! I buy it in bulk when it's on sale... it's the bomb and low-cal!
2- You get to run with Bills and I in September!!! :) And then we'll eat cake for your bday!!!
So glad your blog is no longer private... never found the invite to your private one so i have been out of the loop. Congrats on the future, new little girl. Is this the same little girl that i remember you talking about at LA? as for running... it can be a beast in the beginning. It only gets easier after you condition your heart and lungs. I think my fav part is the adrenaline rush and the muscle tone. Your legs will start showing it a month or two after you start. I feel so great and healthy after I start an exercise routine. Good luck with everything!
Go kim! that is awesome- all I can say is keep going!
ok im of no help cuz Im a lazy bum. but i love love love your kids. they are soo stinkin cute!
Good job Kim. At least you are doing it. I can't believe I am a runner now, because I had no desire to do it in HS. But I started in college just to get skinny and stay in shape, and I just loved the way I felt afterward, so I kept doing it. I have listened to music, and I liked it, but I can run without music too. Running is when I ponder, and get time to myself, so just enjoy the scenery. I also think about all that I can eat now that I'm burning hundreds of calories! Woohoo.
I think I have those same shoes, but in blue! Nice!
Keep up the running... And to keep you motivated, sign up for a 5K... Then a 10K, then a half!! Good luck!
Good job Kim. I am glad you got the shoes. I want to know what app you have on your phone. It sounds better than mine.
